Guess who's back in Mad Town? The Guerrilla Cookie! These hearty baked treats and slice of local local history are making a comeback.

Ted Odell, a local baker, first introduced these popular cookies in the 60s. They quickly became a symbol of the era’s counterculture and a beloved staple in local stores. After disappearing in the early 90s, their secret recipe was thought to be lost with Odell's passing in 2021.

Unexpectedly, a treasure was unearthed—not only was the recipe preserved, but it was bequeathed to the Southern Wisconsin Land Conservancy along with some land. This conservation group recognized the cookie’s significance and potential for a good cause, and are bringing the Guerrilla Cookie back to raise funds for their conservation efforts. This initiative links Ted Odell’s lifelong passion for the environment with the cultural legacy of his cookies.

The Guerrilla Cookie’s return involves meticulous efforts to recreate its authentic look and taste. The recipe was taken to the Colony Brands’ chief baker, who, along with other prairie enthusiasts and old-timers of Madison, have been working through many iterations to nail the exact texture, shine, and flavor of the original.

This is a great a celebration of Madison's history, community, and the spirit of a man who wanted to preserve both his land and his legacy in the form of a simple, wholesome cookie. I can’t wait. Me want cookie!
